Albums of the year 2012

Hello and happy new year – here they are, in no particular order – our top releases of 2012. Some predictable, some surprising. What’s on your list?

Player will be updated with songs from these albums shortly – well it would be but Mixpod folded. Will try to find a solution. New years resolution: post more regularly :-)

Beach House: Bloom; Moonface: Heartbreaking Bravery; Polica: Give up the Ghost

Friends: Manifest; Crystal Castles: (III); The xx: Coexist

Yeasayer: Fragrant World; Grizzly Bear: Shields

Crystal Castles: (III) and remaining Brixton Academy gig tickets

Hi all – well it took this to get us out of hibernation. A steady development from outright anger to resigned dystopia, (III) beats its predecessors on atmospherics for sure. Out now, and very few remaining tics for the Nov 24th Brixon Academy gig are still available here.

Yeasayer – Fragrant World

The reviews are pretty bad overall, but we don’t agree. Much more coherent than the previews two albums, Fragrant World is a psychedelic onslaught that’s both a challenging listen and at the same time suitable as uplifting background music. Listen to them live at Shepherd’s Bush Empire on September 27th. One of our favourite songs from the album is Reagan’s Skeleton:

Paul Banks – The Base and new album

Julian Plenti was laid to rest with the last EP it seems, and Paul Banks now operates under his own name. October 23 will see the release of a new solo album, including with Summertime is Coming a Plenti song however. So maybe he rescued something from his alter ego – certainly the best of the last EP…..

In the meantime, you can listen to a new song, The Base (it’s a MP3 download link!).

It’s already too many years since this gorgeous Plenti song – no chance survival….

Kisses: Funny Heartbeat

Kisses are back for some sunshine and light tunes. No word of a new album yet though.

Remember this one?

The xx: Chained

The second song from forthcoming Coexist has just been released on the internet ….. not sure, is it really gelling? Or are we expecting too much?

Paul Banks: Summertime is coming

…. but what’s not coming, or more precisely what’s delayed, is the new Julian Plenti album. Promised for release this month, we now get an EP instead, with promise of a full album around October. Still, the EP preview is promising.

Muse: Survival – official song of the London Olympics

….. and probably just about the worst Muse song ever, judge for yourself:
